A FIRST for Petersfield Heath has been unearthed during the latest excavations.
Volunteers working alongside volunteers on the People of the Heath project have been excited to discover a mound within a mound.
This mini mound of about six feet across was found inside the eighth barrow on the Heath to be excavated in the three-year scheme.
Over the next few days, it will be carefully opened up to see if there is evidence of a Bronze Age burial there, as there has been elsewhere on the Heath.
“There have been mini mounds like this found nationally but it is a first for Petersfield,” said George Anelay, co-director of the project.
There is a hole around the mound that needs to be investigated too, which could be evidence of a tree’s roots or a trench dug by a grave robber looking for grave goods.
The work on this phase is due to finish on Saturday (May 14). Many volunteers have been helping out again, and groups of schoolchildren have visited, delighted to make finds of flint and more.
