AN APPEAL has been launched for conservation volunteers to help map and survey ponds around Petersfield and in East Hampshire as part of a county wide project.
The Conservation Volunteers charity from Bursledon is overseeing the project, and is making a direct appeal for help in this area.
Charity volunteer Colette Court said: “At the moment we don’t have anyone from Petersfield and East Hampshire, and it would be great if some volunteers from there came forward.
“It’s an important conservation project, and we are looking for people to champion community ponds in that area.”
Called Reviving Hampshire’s Community Ponds, the Heritage Lottery funded project aims to compile a county wide pond directory, and list conservation work they need.
It will also encourage people enjoy their local ponds, while learning about, improving and protecting these valuable natural heritage sites.
Project officer Katy Roberts said “Ponds are amazing features for wildlife, and often have a rich and fascinating heritage. However in most cases nobody knows what is there now, or how it was in the past. We need Pond Champions to change that and make sure our ponds are valued and looked after.”
