A TELECOMMUNICATIONS firm wants to improve 4G coverage for mobile phone customers in the Butser Hill area.

Plans to update equipment at the Butser Hill telecommunications tower will soon be submitted to the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA).

The upgrade, made on behalf of mobile phone network EE and Hutchinson, will involve the swapping and upgrade of existing equipment at the cabin, which is all located on top of the hill.

A 1.2-metre wide satellite dish with associated equipment has been proposed in the plans, as well as a gantry pole holding with a GPS device.

The SDNPA has been notified of the proposals with a full application likely to be submitted in the coming weeks by MBNL, Huawei and WHP Telecoms.

A planning application would not normally be required for the work but will be submitted due to the site’s sensitive location at what is the highest point on the South Downs at 889ft.
