A CHARITY which offers support to domestic abuse victims in East Hampshire has launched a £1m campaign for a safe house.
It could be the difference between life and death, says Southern Domestic Abuse Service (SDAS); the charity also helps victims from Greater Portsmouth and Rushmoor.
The fully staffed refuge will be somewhere victims can stay with their children until they are confident and safe enough to move on, says the charity.
To start the fundraising in earnest, a ‘Buy a Brick’ appeal has been launched, with bronze, silver and gold bricks costing £25, £100 or £1,000, respectively.
SDAS chief executive Claire Lambon said: “It’s crucial we own our own refuge so we can protect woman in the area from perpetrators.
“That’s why we’re launching our buy a brick campaign. We want people to support this ambitious plan.”
East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds was the first person to buy a silver brick another early supporter was legendary yachtswoman Tracey Edwards.
She said: “SDAS has always been incredibly forward thinking and the ambition to buy a refuge is proff of this.”
