A SOUTH of Butser council has set the benchmark in the battle against loneliness and isolation.
Horndean Parish Council has become a conversation starter as it has designated its first ‘Happy to Chat’ benches.
Benches on The Causeway end of Catherington Lane and close to the traffic lights on Portsmouth Road were selected by parish councillors.
Notices reading ‘sit here if you don’t mind someone stopping to say hello’ will be installed on the benches, encouraging users to engage with others in conversation.
“The idea behind the initiative is to break down loneliness and isolation by selecting a location used by a good cross section of the community,” said a spokeswoman for the council.
“The sign performs the function of breaking down the invisible barrier between strangers who find themselves sharing a common location.
“It benefits community cohesion and helps build social capital within the community.
“It’s also hoped the initiative will improve life for those residents needing support and help or would simply like someone to engage with in conversation.”
The proposal was put forward by Cllr Elaine Tickell at the council’s December meeting, with chairman Cllr Lynn Evans seconding.
Meanwhile, there is good news for council tax payers in the village as Horndean Parish Council has frozen its precept as part of its 2020-21 budget.
