Interest is building in a project that’s shining a spotlight on Petersfield’s architecture and historic properties.
The Petersfield Society (PS) has begun work on a guided walk booklet that aims to “enhance understanding and appreciation” of the town’s built environment.
The Buildings Trail booklet is aimed at residents and visitors alike with a focus on buildings in the town centre with significant historic and architectural interest.
Volunteers are busy researching and writing ahead of its anticipated release in Spring while a £500 grant from Cllr Rob Mocatta has gone towards design and print costs.
“The architecture of Petersfield is very special yet we don’t necessary appreciate this as we go about our daily lives,” said Anthony Allen, a PS trustee and conveyor of the Society’s Built Environment Group.
“In the Buildings Trail we explore some of the fascinating buildings in the town centre, exploring their history, architecture and construction.”
Compilers hope the map, photographs and written descriptions in the full-colour booklet will bring the town’s social and economic history to life, while reflecting key architectural and construction trends over the years.
Cllr Mocatta used funding from the Hampshire County Council Grant Funding Scheme to support the booklet, which is expected to be 44 pages long.
“Petersfield is a fascinating town to walk around, admiring both the architecture and the street scene,” said Mr Mocatta, HCC councillor for Petersfield Butser.
“The Square, with our wonderful statue of William IV is an excellent starting point, and the number of blue plaques around the town confirm how much the buildings have shaped the history of Petersfield.”
The Buildings Trail will be available to purchase at the Petersfield Society stall at town festivals, and through local bookshops and online. It is also a companion publication to the Tree Trail, a guided tour of significant trees in the town.
