East Hampshire MEP Catherine Bearder MEP was working close to the metro station in Brussels when it was bombed by ISIS extremists.
She said: "I am currently working from my apartment in Brussels just 100 metres away from Maelbeek Metro Station where the bomb killed and maimed so many people.
“The current atmosphere is quiet and subdued, only disturbed by sirens and helicopters across the capital.
“The emergency services are doing all they can during this terrible ordeal.
“As part of my role as a Quaestor in the Parliament, I am working with the parliaments medical centre to see if we can help with the need for blood that has been requested by the Belgium Red Cross.
“Bad guys will hide anywhere they can and cowardly pick on soft targets whenever an opportunity presents itself. This is why our police forces must be equipped to deal with cross-border threats by cooperating with law officers across borders themselves.
“So many people all over Europe are honouring the victims of yesterday’s heinous attacks, as well as here in Belgium, by holding one minute silences and offering any assistance that they can.
“But this is no time to politicise the situation. We should all stand strong, show solidarity, be vigilant and remember that this is not a religious act, it is an evil act and has no part of any of the world’s religions.
“This is evil people doing evil deeds, and we need to tackle the root causes and defend our democratic way of life.”
