From three pupils to national recognition: Undershaw wins UNICEF Silver AwardEl Dia de los Muertos is a lively and culturally significant Mexican festival, and it was transported to Brookham School in Liphook, providing a colourful and vibrant spectacle that the children really enjoyed.
Popularised by Disney Pixar in the film Coco, the festival focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember those, both human and animal, who have passed to another world and to support their spiritual journey.
Each year group took part in story-telling sessions facilitated by Canela Fina and met Calaquita, the main character, in a magical and touching adventure with her grandmother La Calaca.
The children travelled through time and discovered more about the Mayan and Aztec civilizations and the legends surrounding monarch butterflies.
Celebrating the festival was part of the children’s weekly Spanish lessons during which the children have also been learning about the many Spanish speaking countries in the world and their traditions and cultures.
