The Luminosa choir’s summer concert Broadway – A Choral Celebration promises an exhilarating evening of music celebrating the greatest songwriting partnerships on Broadway.
It will take place on July 5 at St Peter’s Church in Petersfield, with Luminosa performing a diverse programme of Broadway classics from the likes of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The first half will pay tribute to the golden era of musical theatre, with the choir performing much-loved pieces from South Pacific, The King and I, The Sound of Music and Oklahoma!.
The chamber choir will take centre stage with a beautifully crafted Sondheim selection, featuring arrangements from West Side Story, Sweeney Todd and more.
The second half will celebrate more recent Broadway triumphs, including Wicked and Les Misérables. There will be an Andrew Lloyd Webber selection featuring songs from Phantom of the Opera and more.
And a special interlude will showcase a stunning piano and vocal performance providing an intimate and reflective moment.
Luminosa has four choirs for all ages - Luminosa Voices, the main 80-strong adult choir, Luminosa Chamber Voices, the smaller audition-only chamber choir, and two youth choirs, Luminosa Rising Voices, for children aged from 11 to 16 and above, and Luminosa Young Voices, for children aged from six to 11.
It was founded and is led by soprano, artistic director and conductor Rebekah Abbott, who lives near Alton.
She read music at Cambridge University, where she recorded for Radio 3 and was a member of the audition-only Cambridge University Chamber Choir.
Rebekah sang in major performances for the Hogarth Singers at St James’ Piccadilly and the National Trust at Blickling Hall in Norfolk before an extensive career as a soloist.
Recently she conducted the Royal Marines choir and prepared soloists for concerts in the Royal Albert Hall.
