Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire Nigel Atkinson is inviting everyone to plant a tree to honour Queen Elizabeth under the Queen’s Green Canopy scheme.

The project resulted in over one million trees being planted during the season at the start of the Jubilee year last January.

The planting celebrates and commemorates Her Late Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.

She was crowned on June 2, 1953, and died midway through her platinum jubilee year on September 8, 2022.

As a nationwide initiative created to mark the jubilee, the Green Canopy scheme was to conclude in December – the end of the Jubilee year.

Now it has been extended at the request of His Majesty King Charles III, in his role as scheme patron and the driving force behind it.

The Lord-Lieutenant said: “The extension of the Queen’s Green Canopy will build on all that has already been achieved and create a lasting tribute to Her late Majesty’s service to her country and her people.

“As home to one of the nation’s most historic forests, Hampshire has a proud heritage and the enthusiasm for this project across the county has been fantastic.”

The initiative is now extended to include the whole of the tree planting season up to and including this coming March in memoriam to honour Her late Majesty.

There is also the further opportunity to give a tree in memory of Her Late Majesty with gifted trees to be planted in schools and deprived urban areas across the UK.
