AN EPIC tale of monsters, dragons and what is arguably the first English
superhero, will be performed by Petersfield theatre group Lion and Unicorn.
The Anglo-Saxon poem saga Beowulf has seen a resurgence in interest of late, with a performance at the Globe coming up in the summer, and an ITV series in the pipeline.
Lion and Unicorn will perform a stage adaptation on May 12-14 at St Peter's Church, and May 15-17 at Butser Ancient Farm.
Director Kat Wootton said: "This is a stage version of the epic poem which would have been told over the centuries and was finally written down – in West Saxon/Old English – some time between the 8th and 11th centuries, and is probably our oldest surviving piece of literature.
"It was championed by JRR Tolkein and you can see how Lord of the Rings was inspired by it....
