RAIL passengers witnessed an alarming sight on Monday as a substantial fire broke out in a field close to the line between Petersfield and Rowlands Castle.
Crews from Petersfield, Liphook, Cosham, Fareham and Southsea fought the blaze which started around 2.30pm on a stubble field off New Barn Lane.
Four pumps and the same number of Land Rovers were deployed while firefighters used eight hose reels and beaters to extinguish the fire, which affected around five hectares of land.
The fire was clearly visible from the railway while it was also the second time in a month that firefighters were called to the area as a blaze took place in a cutting north of Woodcroft Farm on June 28.
