THEY’RE doing it for Don – fundraisers tackling a charity run for Parkinson’s have made it a family affair.
The Comptons, Robert (62), John (33), Felicity (28) and Hugh (22), Jennifer West (37), and Claire Applin (57) of Sheet, will be lacing up their trainers for the Great South Run in memory of their father and grandfather, Donald Compton.
Donald, a prominent Froxfield resident, died from the disease in 2013, so the family members are taking on the challenge of the Morrisons 5K at the run in Portsmouth and Southsea seafront on October 24 for Parkinson’s UK.
Son Robert said:?“My father was an inspiration to all of us. In his long life, he achieved many things, not least working his way up from a wartime office boy for London Transport to becoming their works and building manager, in charge of a multi million pound budget.
“In retirement he was for a number of years the clerk to Froxfield Parish Council and many local people will remember him in that role.”
Daughter Jennifer (37), of Clanfield, said they had all been spurring each other on with their training.
“This has certainly been a huge challenge as most of the family have no experience of running, but it is one which is so important to all of us.
“Parkinson’s UK is a fantastic charity, providing support to sufferers and their families. We are taking part to raise awareness but also in memory of our beloved dad and grandad. To see this independent and highly intelligent man reduced to such a debilitating condition was heart-breaking.”
They will all be wearing ‘For Don’ T-shirts and running together. They are hoping to raise more than £500.
