MORE than 20 churches in and around Petersfield will be throwing their doors open to cyclists, walkers, runners and motorists raising money for old churches this coming weekend.
The annual Ride and Stride fundraiser sees participants raising money by being sponsored to visit as many churches in the area as possible during the event, which ends at 6pm.
There is no set route, and those taking part can visit as many, or as few, churches as they wish.
The Hampshire and Islands Historic Churches Trust then allocates the money to churches in need of repair or refurbishment.
Petersfield Deanery churches area organiser Cynthia Cooper, from Blackmoor, said: “There will be congregation members at them to welcome the visitors, and in many cases refreshments will be on offer.
“I will be praying for good weather for the day and I’m sure we will get it.”
Cynthia has taken over co-ordinating the fundraising effort in the Petersfield area from 87-year-old Eric Skipper, of Petersfield United Reformed Church in College Street.
He has been organising the event for the past ten years, and says this year he plans to enjoy the day just visiting the churches.
Eric said: “In the past churches in Petersfield, Froxfield and Buriton have benefitted through our fundraising.
“All in all, it’s quite a popular day out, and those taking part seem to enjoy it, so we are hoping for a good turnout this year.”
Historically, members of Petersfield area churches taking part in the day have excelled in their fundraising efforts. Eric added: “In 2013 three of our churches were among the top ten fundraisers in the county.
“In 2015 we raised almost £8,000 and last year about £7,500 but it rained all day which made it hard work for everyone taking part, so this year we will be hoping for dry and warm weather.”
