THE future of what is probably the oldest family firm in Petersfield is in doubt as the aftershock of the pandemic hits home.

Petersfield Linen Services, a laundry on the junction of Frenchmans Road and Rushes Road, opened in 1899 but is now up for sale or rent.

Estate agents Lambert Smith Hampton describe the site, slightly less than an acre in size, as having ‘potential for alternative employment, or redevelopment subject to permissions.’

Current owner Robert James says putting the ageing brick buildings and car park up for sale is just to test interest.

But he wouldn’t confirm if the laundry would continue in the town, or relocate elsewhere.

He said: “The past few years have been challenging for us, and the pandemic and lockdowns have increased that challenge.

“A very large part of our business is with the hospitality industry, and that has been virtually shut for more than a year, which has impacted on us.

“The business remains open, but we are exploring the commercial interest in the site.

“At this stage we are just looking to gauge the level of interest, and once we know that, a decision will be made on the future.”
