FIREFIGHTERS from Horndean were called to a village near Petersfield on Monday after a gas mains caught fire beside a busy road.

There were dramatic scenes in Greatham as gas from a ruptured pipe close to Petersfield Road ignited around 3pm.

Crews from Petersfield, Cosham joined Horndean colleagues and used two hose reels jets to cool the fire near the entrance to Deal Farm.

They also clamped the pipework and made the scene safe before emergency repairs were carried out by gas engineers.

Gas and electricity to surrounding properties was also cut off while the operation took place. The stop message coming through at 6.20pm.
