DESPITE a bad weather forecast, exhibitors and visitors turned out in good numbers for Harting Horticultural Society’s Summer Show.
Held in a marquee on Harting War Memorial Playing Fields, there was a colourful display of flowers, fruit and vegetables, and cookery handicrafts and photography. Show spokesman Cynthia Clue said: “The forecast of raging winds and rain fortunately didn’t put off exhibitors or visitors.
“And as well as all the exhibits, there was also tempting tea, cakes and produce; there was something for everyone and the raffle was as popular as ever.”
Despite the forecast, for exhibitor David Thistleton-Smith it was a superb day. He walked away with two show trophies, the Royal Horticultural Society Banksian medal and the Uppark Challenge Cup, and he came away with 11 firsts, eight seconds and three thirds in the 32 vegetable classes.
Malcolm Hutchings swept the board in the Dahlia section, winning all six classes, and collecting the Lutman Dahlia Cup. He also picked up the Wakeford Cup, for the best flower exhibit.
