A bricklayer with a sideline in art has cemented a link with John Westwood after surprising the Petersfield Bookshop owner with a special Portsmouth FC-themed print.

Fellow PFC supporter Bob Bowdige recently travelled from Brighton to present ‘Pompey John’ with a print dedicated to the football club he loves so dearly.

The artist included Westwood’s famous hat in his drawing as football fans around the UK associate John’s matchday outfit with the club.

But the subject was unaware of the artistic homage, so Bob made a special journey with John being taken back by the inclusion and gesture.

Mr Bowdige, who used to live in Portsmouth, sketches while listening to Pompey matches on the radio to make the experience “less stressful”.

The piece includes lots of nice nods to the club’s past and heritage, from the mock Tudor club entrance and thumbs-up soldier to the FA Cup trophy and reference to its infamous 657 faction.

“John’s hat had to go somewhere in the piece as you immediately associate it with the club,” said the 66-year-old, who is donating five per cent from every print sale to Pompey in the Community.

“He didn’t know anything about it. I felt since something of him was in the print I had to give him a copy and it was the least I could do – he was really taken back by it.”

“I thought it was great and my hat being part of it makes me feel very humble,” said Mr Westwood, who made a donation after receiving the surprise gift “completely out of the blue”.

“It’s got the Blue Army, it’s got Fort Fratton. It’s got everything in there that encapsulates that Portsmouth is a working class city and Pompey is the focal point.”
