BEDALES welcomes back “one of the under-recognised giants of British modern jazz”, pianist John Law, on November 6.
He leads his quartet, New Congregation, in a concert drawn from the 11 new compositions featured on the 2015 double-CD These Skies In Which We Rust. It combines simple melodies and complex textures, fusing elements from classical to rock.
He is partnered with Parliamentary Jazz Award-winning saxophonist Sam Crockatt, bassist Oli Hayhurst whose strength and driving bass lines have coloured countless British jazz projects and Pharaoh Sanders’ European Quartet, and drummer Dave Hamblett.
A conservatoire-trained classical piano prodigy – his first performance was given aged only six – and a young pianist mentored by no less a figure than Alfred Brendel, John turned to jazz in 1986.
His initial concentration on the more experimental reaches of the field began to modify by around 1996, when he started to draw more on his classical roots. A strong source of inspiration for the latest album was the revelation of a series of poems written by his teenage daughter.
John Law and his quartet can be heard at Bedales’ Olivier Theatre, Church Road, Steep, at 8pm. Tickets are £12 with £10 concessions from [email protected] or call 01730 711511, and from One Tree Books.
