A PETERSFIELD woman who leapt in and asked her then boyfriend if he would like to marry her, is to appear on TV reading a line of a love poem.
Leap Day, February 29, comes around every four years, and is traditionally when a woman can propose, and on that day in 2008 Katheryn Ellis-Blandford, then 32, was at home with John Blandford, 38 at the time.
She said: “We were cuddling on a bean bag when we saw a feature about girls proposing on the BBC’s The One Show. I popped the question and he did not hesitate to say yes.”
The couple married on July 4, 2009, in St Peter’s Church in The Square. On the day, Kathryn’s friend and showman David Weeks escorted her to the church and up the aisle. On Monday, February 29, Kathryn, of Cranford Road, will appear on the The One Show.
She said: “I am one of ten women reading a line from a love poem. It was filmed in the shop where we chose our engagement rings, now Glen Boyden Jewellery in the High Street. It was very exciting.”
According to an old Irish legend, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men – not just the more traditional way around – on Leap Day.
