LIPHOOK University of the Third Age (U3A) has held its annual open day at the Liphook Millennium Centre.

Most of the 40-odd groups were represented and visitors were able to wander round and chat to the leaders and their helpers.

Those which seemed to be attracting high levels of interest during the March 13 event were the trips out and theatre club, along with local history and the strolling and walking groups.

Many people went along to see what the U3A is all about and obviously liked what they saw as they decided to join there and then.

By the end of the afternoon some 24 people had signed up and paid their subscriptions for the coming year.

Likewise several of the groups increased their numbers, both from those who have just joined the branch and from existing members looking to increase their level of activity within the Liphook U3A.

A completely new Building a Model Railway group, led by Tony Bettger, was announced on the day and immediately attracted seven people who expressed an interest in joining the group.

On the basis of the interest shown, it looks likely that the group will be starting in the middle of next month as originally proposed.

The likely charge for the 12 monthly sessions will be around £25 per person.

Tony will be contacting these prospective members shortly to tie up a first meeting date and the chosen layout project.

Free refreshments, in the form of tea, coffee and homemade cakes, were available all afternoon, which meant that John Horner and his team of helpers were kept continually busy brewing tea and coffee as well as restocking the cakes display.

Dylan’s ice creams were also on sale and proved to be popular with many.
