AROUND 50 Ukrainians living in or around Petersfield celebrated completing an eight-week English language course at St Lawrence Church Hall in Station Road.

The Rural Refugee Network classes funded by East Hampshire District Council were run by experienced English teachers Hilary Wright and Susanni Jameson.

Hilary said: “It’s a privilege to be part of the first step in helping people to adjust and feel at home.”

Susanni added: “The group were a delight to teach and great fun to be with.”

The students received certificates of attendance from refugee network trustee Kath Lawrence.

Alina, a teacher and accountant from Khmelnytskyi in Western Ukraine, arrived here in April with her daughter Luiza, who also attended the course.

Alina, who enjoys Petersfield and its peaceful and friendly community, said: “English lessons are very necessary, as it is very difficult to adapt to society without knowing the language.

“We learn it through our great teachers with pleasure and passion.

“Lessons are held in a friendly atmosphere, in a wonderful team. I would like more classes.”

Andrew, from Kiev, said he hoped the course would help him gain construction skills certification so he can find work.
