A DEBATE over a proposed new footbridge across the A3 at Petersfield has resulted in agreement to find out an estimated cost for the structure.
The idea was discussed at Petersfield Town Council’s Town Development Committee (TDC) meeting last Friday in the town hall.
The thinking behind introducing a new footbridge on the western side of the town is to allow people to cross the busy A3 without having to beat the traffic roaring along the road.
When the bypass was opened around the town 25 years ago this month, the path of the new road cut across many footpaths.
It means that while some rights of way still exist, anyone looking to use the paths must negotiate four lanes of traffic travelling at speeds of 70mph or more.
The idea of a footbridge for walkers and cyclists is to link the town centre with the surrounding countryside to give the public better and safer access to it.
Members of the committee agreed the first thing needed was an estimate for a new bridge over the road, to see if the idea was cost effective.
Committee chairman and Petersfield town councillor, John Palmer, said: “The Highways Agency is responsible for maintaining the road and its infrastructure, and should have an approximate idea how much a new bridge would be.”
Members also agreed that the possibility of funding from the Rural Communities Fund should be investigated. Town council clerk Neil Hitch said a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the busy dual carriageway was in the local infrastructure delivery plan.
But Hampshire County Councillor for Petersfield Hangers Russell Oppenheimer said a separate proposal could provide an alternative solution.
A proposal for a fire engine museum on the Stroud side of the A3, in fields alongside Winchester Road, is on the drawing board, the meeting heard.
It is thought that fields to the west of the main road, opposite the end of Beckham Lane, are the preferred choice. Cllr Oppenheimer said those behind the proposal say a safe foot and cycle route crossing over the A3 from the town to the museum would be provided.
