THE NEWLY-FORMED Petersfield Police Cadets unit is to join this year’s Remembrance Day parade in the town.
Also this year for the first time the traditional parade on Sunday, November 12, will be led by the band from the Training Ship Active, an independent naval cadet unit from Waterlooville.
Co-ordinated each year by the Petersfield branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL), the morning of Remembrance starting in The Square marks 99 years since the end of the First World War.
RBL chairman Commander Clive Lewis (retired) said: “Since then Petersfield has, in one form or another, paid its respects, and shown its thanks for the sacrifice made by those who gave their lives not just in the First World War but in all the conflicts since.”
The day starts at 10am with Churcher’s College band playing in The Square. Then at 10.25am there will be 20-minute open air service in The Square, led by Petersfield vicar, the Rev Will Hughes.
At 10.50am the band will lead a parade of veterans, cadet units, including the newly formed The Petersfield School’s Combined Cadet Force, Scout and Guide units, to the War Memorial in High Street.
There the Roll of Honour listing all those from Petersfield who have died in wars since 1914 will be read out.
There will also be the traditional two minutes’ silence, and a trumpeter will sound the Last Post.
There will be free parking in the central car park and at Petersfield Station for the commemoration.
On Saturday, November 11, there will be a short Armistice Day service at the War Memorial from 10.45am.
There will also be a two minute silence.
