AFTER 35 fond years of serving up fish and chips to the residents of Petersfield, Nicolas Koussertari is hanging up his apron for the last time.

The charismatic caterer, who owned Nicky’s Fish n’ Chips in Sheep Street, welcomed new owner Tim Kane at his retirement party, which included family, staff and friends.

A family man and musician, Nicky was often heard singing and entertaining customers with his accordion. Daughter Maria Martin said: “Dad would pull out his accordion and dress up as Santa at Christmas and sing his heart out.

“The grandchildren would run around the customers, while the rest of us drank mulled wine. Dad’s shop was often the place to be for fun, family, laughter and merriment. Not to mention a Greek dance or two.

“We have so many memories spanning 35 years. I was six months old when my parents moved to Petersfield and my children have grown up in the shop.

“My son, Anthony, learned to walk there and my daughter was rather rapidly born in the flat above the shop.

“My sisters and I all worked in the family business, which provided so many life skills. I will never forget the laughter and hearing dad call out greetings to residents from behind the fryer.”

A few life-changing, special meetings of the heart took place at Nicky’s, which have convinced the staff that fish and chips can be the backdrop for finding love and getting married.

A politician and campaigner, Nicky’s passion for local news and ensuring the future for local businesses in Petersfield, continues to this day.

Nicky’s Fish n’ Chips was often the place where debates could be heard and ideas shared while people waited for the cod to cook or even while Nick was washing windows up a tall ladder.

Nicky said: “Over 35 years time has flown by so quickly that it almost seems impossible to think of all the great friends that we have made through Nicky’s Fish n’ Chips, and that I have watched most of my young employees grown up to become very successful in their careers.”

He added: “I haven’t gone for good as I’m still living in Petersfield so I hope to see many friendly faces around.

“I would like to say a big thank you to all those who have supported my wife and I over the years. I will really miss it but I know my four daughters and grandchildren will still keep me busy.”
