A PETERSFIELD pensioner who spent the night on a Windsor street says he wouldn’t have missed the Royal Wedding for the world.

David Weeks (77), of Penns Road, says he is proud to be a “true Royalist,” and he hasn‘t missed a royal occasion in years – and he believes that Saturday’s wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was one of the best he has attended.

The former British Rail ticket inspector, circus showman and newspaper salesman, left Petersfield on the 7.15pm train to London on Friday, wearing his trademark top hat and hand made blue sequinned suit – but with some Royal wedding extras.

He said: “I had flags with pictures of Prince Harry and his bride and I put the pictures on my jacket.

“When I arrived at Windsor I found a place opposite where I stood for one of the Queen’s anniversary appearances.

“The atmosphere was amazing, the people next to me were local and went home and got me a blanket, a nearby cafe was open all night. It was wonderful, everyone was really friendly.”

After a sausage sandwich and coffee breakfast at about 5am, he says the day really got going.

He added: “The pavements were packed, the sun was out and everything was right, it was one of the best days, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

“She looked marvellous in white, he had his uniform on, they looked lovely.”

David received plenty of attention himself, thanks to his trademark clothing which the people of Petersfield are fully familiar with.

Television cameras picked him out from crowds of over 100,000 people lining the streets of Windsor and images of him were beamed to millions of television sets around the world during the wedding coverage.

But the man who has been in attendance at almost all the public royal events of the past 40 years, says sadly this may be his last outing.

He added: “But I love the Royal family, so who knows.”
