COMMUTERS could be persuaded to swap their cars for bicycles if a blanket 20mph speed limit is introduced in Petersfield.
The radical call was made by Councillor Rob Mocatta last Friday during a meeting of the Town Development Committee.
The councillor believes that more cyclists might be encouraged to get on the town’s roads if there are slower vehicle speeds.
However, members were hard-pushed to back his suggestion, with Jamie Matthews calling a similar scheme in Winchester an “unmitigated disaster” and both Julie Butler and Mary Vincent questioning the viability.
“I don’t think it will be achievable in Petersfield,” said Mrs Butler, with the latter adding: “People don’t like doing 20mph and if it’s a straight bit of road, like Pulens Lane, and it’s clear then they will go fast.”
