A LIBERAL Democrat peer gave an insight into the Brexit negotiations at an evening for local party members in Petersfield.

The meeting in St Laurence’s Church Hall in Station Road on Tuesday, September 26, heard House of Lords Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Lord Stoneham give his perspective on the talks with the EU.

Petersfield Liberal Democrat spokesman David Podger said: “The hall was packed, and he gave a Westminster view on the progress of the Brexit negotiations, and also gave insightful answers to audience questions.

“He then outlined how the House of Lords would play an important part in scrutinising any new legislation on our future relationship with Europe and, when necessary, ask the House of Commons to think again if measures coming before the Lords conflicted with national interests and Britain’s place in the world.

“He also emphasised that the Brexit debate should not be allowed to overshadow discussion of some of the other pressing issues of the day such as Britain’s low productivity and skills gap, funding for the health service, housing and social care.”
