A PETERSFIELD man is preparing to walk the streets of London to support the homeless after being inspired by a book he read.

Stephen Dew is taking on The Big Issue Night Walk in March – a 20km walk starting in Shoreditch.

He was motivated to take part after having read A Streetcat Named Bob – the story of homeless man James Bowen who survived on the streets thanks to the support of his much-loved feline friend.

Steve (50), from Sussex Road, said: “I read the book and I saw the film. It was reading the book that made me want to do something for The Big Issue.

“After reading the book, it made me change my attitude towards it.

“He was a recovering drug addict and the cat saved his life. He talked about working for The Big Issue which got him back on his feet.

“If I can do something to help then I will.”

Steve went out and bought a copy of The Big Issue, and it was there that he saw an advert for the walk, which takes place in March.

He has to raise at least £250 to take part and he is self funding this and encouraging friends and family to support him.

“I said to friends and family over Christmas not to get me anything but just to put money towards my Just Giving page,” he added.

“I really want to help with these causes. I have never really felt anything about homelessness before. But the book changed my views.”

The 20km walk takes place through the night, starting at 10pm and finishing in the early hours of the morning.

Personal insights from Big Issue vendors will take place before the event in a bid to inspire and encourage those taking part. Some of the vendors will also be taking part.
