SPECSAVERS opticians in Petersfield has donated high visibility jackets to a local cycling academy for young riders so they are safer on the roads now it’s getting darker earlier.

The yellow florescent jackets were given to the Pedal2Pedal academy, founded by Hannah Attenburrow, who works for the Liphook-based Dreams Come True children’s charity.

The academy encourages youngsters from in and around Petersfield to become better riders in a fun and progressive environment, which includes mountain biking at Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

Hannah said: “Now that winter is approaching, the children can take their high visibility jackets home and wear it when riding to school or out and about with friends and family.

“They will also help our young riders be seen on the trails at the country park in the evenings, and enable them to enjoy their sport for longer in the coming months.

“Being visible in the dark evenings with a high visibility jacket is one small step everyone can take to improve their safety, and it’s great to know that the children will be more visible to drivers.”

Specsavers in Petersfield Square has always championed children’s safety and visibility on local roads, and to date has supplied hundreds of fluorescent vests to the community over the last decade.

Store director Jo Cox said: “It was a pleasure to meet Hannah and the Pedal2Pedal children at a mountain bike training session at Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

“The children were having lots of fun zooming about in the lovely setting of the park. “Hannah’s efforts are commendable and it is nice to play a small role in keeping children visible and safe.”

She added that the store is keen to hear from other groups who may need high visibility jackets, and they are asked to contact her on 01730 710820 for details.
