PETERSFIELD Pumpkin Growers Association’s 40th annual competition saw a husband and wife team collect first and second prizes in the heaviest vegetable section.

Each autumn association members gather at the Half Moon pub in Sheet to compare pumpkins, and to see who has grown the biggest, heaviest and best.

This year Richard Boorers’ pumpkin came first, weighing in at a massive 62lb, in second was his wife Dorothy, and the pumpkin of Ian Huxley was third heaviest. Phillipe Woodruffe won the best matched pair trophy.

Association secretary Simon Crew said: “There was a good turn out with some impressive pumpkins being entered. The best all round pumpkin award as voted for by the members went to Peter Crew.

“In the heaviest pumpkin competition, the second and third places were difficult to call as the weights were very close, and three pumpkins had to be weighed a second time to determine the finishing order.”
