PETERSFIELD residents angry with what they say is slow progress dealing with speeding and dangerous traffic on a main road may have to wait even longer than expected for answers.
Those living along The Causeway fear what they consider to be the fast moving traffic will result in a serious accident on the road.
Resident Wilhelmina Horner said: “Drivers blatantly ignore the speed limit and the Christmas holiday has brought many further examples of maniacs driving past our front door.”
Her neighbour Camilla Dennis said: “I fear there will be a serious accident, even a fatality if this is not addressed.”
Since last October the campaigners have been trying to attract the attention of the body responsible for road safety, Hampshire County Council.
But the county councillor responsible for the Petersfield Butser ward, Ken Moon, lives in Waterlooville, and won’t be standing in the next county council elections on Thursday, May 4.
In response to repeated pleas for him to take action, Ms Horner said that she had heard nothing from him; on December 13 he replied to her by email.
He said: “I have taken the opportunity to forward this correspondence to my colleagues at Hampshire County Council for their advice in this matter and will respond to you again in due course.”
On January 3 Mrs Horner again urged Cllr Moon to respond: “I’d be very grateful if you can provide me with an update on this situation.”
On January 10 he replied: “I am this week meeting with my colleague from Hampshire County Council to discuss a number of issues, and will hopefully be able to respond further early next week.”
But The Causeway hasn’t got a dangerous track record accident records show.
Road safety surveys are carried out for Hampshire County Council by East Hampshire District Council (EHDC), who has referred the campaigners back to Hampshire.
EHDC says as there haven’t been any injury accidents on The Causeway it can’t recommend traffic calming measures.
This is despite hundreds of new houses either being built, or soon to be built, along the Causeway, and on roads off it.
