AN OPEN day in Petersfield attracted scores of people keen to join an interest group.
Held in St Peter’s church, it was organised by the Petersfield branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A) to promote its many activities.
U3A group co-ordinator Steve Watts moved to Petersfield three years ago.
He said: “I heard about the U3A and got in touch.
“They are a very friendly bunch, I’ve made lots of friends, and there’s a wide range of interest groups.”
Marianne Holmes is one the U3A hand bell ringers, who meet in the Courtyard Room, behind Winton House in Petersfield High Street.
She said: “We would love it if more people joined.”
At the moment there are six book circles.
Peter Gillard organises one circle, and said: “Members of some groups all read and discuss the same book, whereas our group all read different books, and then talk about them.”
Current affairs is also popular among U3A members, said Keith Hopper.
“There are two current affairs discussion groups – if there was interest another could be started,” he added.
Gill Wandless plays table tennis every week with members at the Taro Leisure Centre.
She said: “It’s at 9am on Mondays, and really gets you going for the week.”
But artist Bob Simmons says there is a more relaxed approach to his art sessions in Petersfield Community Centre off Love Lane.
He said: “People can paint whatever they want, it’s not a class, we are all there to help and learn from each other.”
And the U3A cyclists certainly enjoy themselves.
Trevor Nichols said: “The oldest member is about 87, and we have at least two rides a month, and a cycling holiday each summer.”
And the newly formed U3A wine appreciation group is proving very palatable, says Pamela Peacock.
She added: “It’s very enjoyable, everyone is very welcome to come along.”
