PETERSFIELD drivers are being urged not to panic-buy fuel as the crisis continues.
At one point cars were queueing along Dragon Street (pictured right) to get into the petrol station there, and at times none of the three petrol stations have had fuel.
East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds said: “The key thing is for everyone to get normal quantities of fuel just when we need it.
“The government is focused on getting things resolved as quickly as possible, managing the short-term demand spike.
“This includes relaxing competition laws temporarily, the temporary visas for HGV drivers, and having military assistance on standby if needed.”
And accusations that fuel companies were adding to motorists’ misery by putting up prices overnight weren’t denied.
When asked why petrol had gone up overnight by 3p a litre at Ramshill Esso after the shortages began, an Exxon Mobil spokesman said: “The site is owned and operated by an independent retail company who are responsible for all operations on site, including the setting of pump prices.”
