PLANS to build 30 homes in a village west of Petersfield have been rubber stamped by a committee.

People in Stroud will also get a new village hall as part of the scheme to develop a 1.4hectare plot south of the Seven Stars.

The application by Cala Homes was its second for the site off Ramsdean Road as a previous scheme for 26 homes and a hall was rejected last October due to concerns about landscaping, design and affordable housing provision.

There was little opposition this time round with the biggest worry being parking provision at the hall.

The plans, which were supported by Stroud Parish Council, were approved by the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) last Thursday when its planning committee met in Midhurst.

“I think a pretty good job has been done here,” said member Alun Alesbury while Doug Jones called the latest proposals a “great improvement” on the previous scheme.

He added: “I think it’s also really enlightening and rewarding to see how much co-operation there has been and how the community has worked with the developers.

“They’ve been seeking a village hall for many, many years in Stroud so I think it’s really great to see it coming to fruition. I support it.”

The proposals include 12 affordable homes while the development will feature a mix of one to five-bedroom houses.

The hall, which faces onto a village green, will include a large function room and will be managed by the parish council.

The hall will be a “feature building”, according to the developer which will also make a significant financial contribution to the SDNPA, with 15 per cent going to the parish council, as part of the agreement.

Planning manager at Cala Homes (Thames) Craig Burden said the firm was thrilled to get planning permission for the “exciting new development”.

The first homes are expected to be ready for occupation in July 2019.
