EAST Hampshire Remain in the EU activists say their hard work and a huge team effort payed off as they managed to win the local poll.
The district remain in campaign got 37,346 votes, giving an 800 vote majority over the leave the EU campaign.
Remain spokesman Mark Smith said: “We are really pleased, to win was a great return for the team’s hard work, effort time and commitment.
“We aren’t politicians just 20 ordinary people and had to learn as we went along, so we are really pleased with the result, winning by 800 votes is fantastic.”
When the East Hampshire result was announced at about 4.10am in Petersfield Festival Hall, towns like Chichester, Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport, Hart and New Forest, had all announced their results -- a Brexit vote.
Mr Smith said: “East Hampshire brought into the remain campaign, although I accept almost 50 per cent of the voters elected to leave the EU, but it’s still a good result.”
Liberal Democrat Richard Robinson had also campaigned under the remain banner.
He said: “People from all parties put aside their natural political differences and worked together, and it worked, a great result.”
UKIP activist Peter Diamond said: “In a Conservative heartland, for us this was a victory.”
