Town councillors have backed proposals to alter the corner of a Petersfield beauty spot as part of a safety improvement scheme at an accident blackspot.

The plans approved on Thursday were for changes around the ‘deadly’ Durford Road crossroads and include the removal and replacement of hedging on Heath Road East.

Minor landscaping changes and a pedestrian ramp on the Heath corner are also proposed with members of the Sport, Recreation and Environment Committee backing the HCC plans by three votes to one.

The latest proposals for the notorious junction include raising the height of the carriageway to pavement level.

Similar “raised tables” are also planned south of the crossroads and north of the Montague Gardens junction as part of the Pulens Lane scheme.
