KIND-hearted parishioners at St Laurence’s in Petersfield have boosted good causes, as the Catholic church prepares for a global event.

Church member Yvette Younane has been working with refugee children living in Greece.

And talks given at St Laurence’s on her experiences in Chios prompted parishioners to donate £1,300 for the Be Aware and Share charity she is working with.

This organisation aims to provide education to the children and sanctuary from the cold, dirty and monotonous nature of life in a refugee camp. In one year, it has set up a primary school, a secondary school and a youth centre.

Yvette, who has travelled out there again this week, said she was “overwhelmed” by the money donated and the response to her talks. “I will continue to do my best for this most worthwhile charity. Many thanks to everyone,” she said.

A traditional tea party with piano music and cucumber sandwiches was held at the church in aid of the Southampton-based charity Gift of Sight last week.

Petersfield area resident Sarah Price, an eye nurse at the University of Southampton, gave an interesting talk about eye conditions and vital search carried out by Gift of Sight.

Organiser Ann Saunders collected in £260 from parishioners to give to the charity which “was beyond all expectations”.

The St Laurence’s community will also be gathering on Women’s World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 3. With a special service at 1.30pm, on the theme of ‘Am I Being Unfair to You’, parishioners will join millions around the world praying for this year’s chosen country, the Philippines.

Organiser Louse Benzimra said: “Everyone is most welcome and we hope that many of our Filipino parishioners will be able to join us for this special service.”
