CHILDREN who visit a farm near Clanfield will be given the chance to hold a piece of history in their hands.
Butser Ancient Farm (BAF) has been given a box full of artefacts uncovered during a 1992 dig in the Fishbourne area near Chichester.
The items, which include pieces of ceramic building material, have been catalogued, studied and recorded by the Fishbourne Roman Palace team. The artefacts given to BAF will be used to teach pupils about Roman Britain through the Butser education programme.
There was nothing out of character about the handover with members of the BAF Butser XI Legion collecting the artefacts from curator, Rob Symmons.
“Sometimes, pieces of tile like the ones we’ve been given still have fingerprints inside them, so that you could essentially put your finger or thumb into the print of the same person who made it,” said Tiff Francis, creative developer at BAF.
“What better way to bring ourselves closer to ancient people?”
The Roman Summer extravaganza will take place at BAF throughout August, culminating with a Glorious Games and Gladiators day on August 28.
