STUDENTS at The Petersfield School plotted the path of a satellite and received signals from it.
The pupils are members of the TPS STEM Communication Club, and met over a weekend to plot the path of the satellite NOAA 19 Weather Satellite.
Guided by STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) Communications Ambassador, Andy Webster, the students used “yagi” antennae made from plastic plumbing tubes and metal tape measures to enhance the radio signal received.
They then anticipated the direction the satellite pathway would take using Gpredict software to ensure the maximum signal was captured.
The students then decoded a signal from the satellite using another computer programme to bring up a visual of the weather, over the UK and Italy
STEM Co-ordinator, Kathy Sherlock, said, “According to the students, the best bit was putting all that work in to then see the visual image at the end.”
