A ‘Save a Penny’ campaign has been launched, aimed at Petersfield’s youngsters, to fund the town’s skateboard park extension.
The young people who use the skateboard park are being urged to save up their small change in collecting tins.
And the tins, which ask supporters to ‘Save 1p a Day’, are also being put in shops and businesses in the Petersfield area – including the High Street office of the Petersfield Post.
It is hoped that, little by little, this will help hit the £10,000 target of community fundraising set by Nigel Wells of the Festival for Young People, which is organising the £150,000 extension.
This will double the size of the park and it will be one of the first of its kind in the country aimed at disabled young people and those in wheelchairs.
It has planning permission and is currently being designed by Wheelscape, bespoke skatepark contractors. Grants are now being sought, and Nigel is planning school visits to get the youngsters on board.
He has also sought the views of disabled young people as to what they would like to see installed at the park. A meeting was recently held on site too with a representative from Parents’ Voice, an information and advice service for parents and carers of disabled children in Hampshire.
“I keep being asked when the extension will be ready,” said Nigel, who already has £4,900 towards the £10,000. “When the money has been raised is the answer.”
