A LIFESAVING defibrillator has been installed in a redundant telephone box in The Square by a Petersfield charity.
Saving Lives Together (SaLT) was launched in January 2018, and at the end of last year the team took over the phone box near the church.
They cleaned it out, repainted it, installed electricity and raised money for the defibrillator.
Oncology nurse and SaLT trustee Ellie Butcher said: "The phone box is a listed building, and it took months to get permission to use it. The Heartbeat Trust helped us with the adoption and now the defibrillator is in there - and it’s a very simple bit of kit to use."
SaLT is mainly made up of nurses, midwives and doctors, dedicated to spreading the knowledge needed to save a person whose heartbeat or breathing has stopped, including through a heart attack.
Ellie said: "We are using a two-pronged approach and run public training sessions for anyone who wants to learn about CRP."
CRP is an emergency lifesaving procedure that uses chest compression to restart the heart.
Ellie added: "Compared to many other countries, our bystander use of CRP, when someone needs to step in and resuscitate a victim, is low.
"CRP is a simple skill easy to master, and it can be administered by anyone, and saves lives.
"And we want to see publicly-accessible defibrillators. They are a very simple bit of kit to use – you don’t need training."
The defibrillator is registered with the ambulance service and can be accessed by anyone whenever needed.
