A TRAVEL and tourism information hub has re-opened at Petersfield railway station.
During opening hours, volunteers will be on hand to give visitors to the town details about the South Downs National Park and attractions, walks, accommodation and other information.
Refurbishing the former parcel sorting office and organising the volunteers, has been overseen by the East Hampshire Community Rail Partnership, whose members include Petersfield Town Council and East Hampshire District Council.
Partnership spokesman Mark Miller said that the office had been such a success last year, with more than 900 people coming in to ask for information, it had been decided to re-open it this year.
He added: “We significantly raised the profile of Petersfield and the train station with visitors and locals.
“Railway staff have appreciated something positive being done at Petersfield, and local politicians have noted the improvements.”
And to help make the station forecourt more attractive, Petersfield Community Garden members have turned untidy green spaces into vegetable beds.
Community garden spokesman Sue Edberg said: “As a celebration of the opening and the marvellous work of community garden members in the station forecourt, we would like to welcome you to view the community vegetable beds made from donated locally sourced recycled materials.”
The office will open from 10am to 3pm, Wednesday to Sunday until the end of October, but the opening hours could be extended if enough volunteers came forward to help man it.
Mr Miller said: “While we have a core group of staff and volunteers to help run the office, we are always on the lookout for more.
“If you know of anyone who would like to volunteer with us, I would welcome receiving their details.”
