Well-known Petersfield businessman Chris Jacobs, who ran the family firm Jacobs and Hunt, has died aged 89.
A packed St Peter’s Church recently celebrated his life and bid him a final farewell, with family, friends and former clients gathering to share memories and pay tribute to his long service to the town.
Mr Jacobs lived his whole life in Petersfield and ran the Lavant Street business as a chartered surveyor and auctioneer. The family firm covered estate agency, lettings and auction rooms, and many people remembered buying their house from him.
During his career he spent much of his time valuing fine art and antiques. He held auction sales not only in the Lavant Street rooms but also in private houses, village halls, marquees and even in the middle of fields.
He was often asked to give talks about antiques and the life of an auctioneer, and enjoyed taking part in the occasional charity auction.
Jacobs and Hunt was established by his grandfather in 1895, and Mr Jacobs was proud the firm celebrated its centenary in 1995. After nearly 50 years in business, he retired in 2001.
In his younger days he was a keen sportsman, playing tennis and hockey, and enjoyed motor racing, regularly visiting the Goodwood circuit.
He was also an enthusiastic member of local musical groups, chairman of the Petersfield Operatic Society for 10 years, where he supported numerous productions, and a member of Petersfield Round Table, Ex-Tablers and the 41 Club.
After retiring, Mr Jacobs became a trustee of Petersfield Museum for 16 years and later a valued volunteer, sharing his knowledge of the town’s history with visitors.
He was a family man and will be greatly missed by his relatives and all who knew him.
