REPAIR work to the footbridge over the railway line at Petersfield station has begun.

The wooden steps and footway are being replaced after a survey last year found they were in poor repair and could potentially be unsafe.

It is expected the repairs will take about 10 days, but it is hoped there will also be enough time, and available manpower, to repaint the bridge, thought to have been built in the 1920s.

It was closed unexpectedly after a survey last summer it could be unsafe; the treads and footway were in danger of becoming rotten the survey revealed.

It was shut immediately and has remained closed ever since.
