THE KING’S Arms now owns the former JSW restaurant in Petersfield and plans to open it as the King’s Arms Youth Centre in September.

Previous owner Jake Watkins made the deal possible by agreeing to take payment in two instalments, giving the charity time to fundraise for the remaining amount.

It has acquired number 20 Dragon Street in 2020 during its 20th year of operation with the help of money from two trust funds.

The charity plans to move to the new site during the summer and open in time for the start of the 2020–21 school year.

Operations manager Caroline Aeschliman said: “This is a very exciting year for local young people as the youth centre, after searching for the last seven years, finally finds a permanent home to call its own.

“A team from the current youth membership of The King’s Arms will be looking at how to best use the new building and are working on presenting the code of conduct, membership and layout options.

“An enormous thank you to everyone involved – it has been quite a journey.”

The King’s Arms currently operates from two sites. Activities in Petersfield include an after-school club for secondary age schoolchildren and sixth-formers which runs every weekday, plus a group for young carers, while anxiety support and chat and craft groups are among the activities on offer in Alton.

Summing up its aims and values, a spokesman said: “We run a range of different clubs for different age groups.

"Our hope is that the young people will take ownership of their club and help us to turn it into something that meets their needs and inspires them to get the best out of life.”

During its seven-year quest for a base The King’s Arms has been supported by CMS Solicitors, which has carried out pro bono legal work, and VECA Architects.

With all the 20s involved in the move, the charity is asking people to continue the theme by donating £20 by text message.

Texts saying KINGSARMSP should be sent to 70450. They will cost £20 plus the price of one standard rate message.

Anyone wishing to make a donation for a different amount, offer an interest-free loan or find out more about events planned for the next three months should call Caroline Aeschliman or Mandy May on 01730 231292, or email [email protected] or [email protected]
