Firefighters from three counties spent more than four hours tackling a large grass fire near Liphook on Sunday, with one hectare of grass and trees damaged.

Emergency crews were called shortly before 2pm on Sunday, August 2, to reports of a fire on Haslemere Road, Lynchmere, near the junction with Devil's Lane.

At the height of the incident, 12 fire vehicles, including a water carrier, were at the scene as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: "We were called shortly before 2pm on Sunday 2 August to reports of a grass fire at Haslemere Road, Lynchmere, near Liphook.

"Joint Fire Control mobilised 12 fire vehicles to the scene, including a water carrier.

"Upon arrival crews were faced with a large field fire. Firefighters used off-road vehicles and hose reels to bring the fire under control. One hectare of grass and trees were damaged.

"The last crew left the scene at 6.32pm."

Residents were urged to avoid the area while firefighters dealt with the blaze, with people living nearby also advised to keep their windows and doors closed because of the smoke.

The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
