THERE is to be a free entry health morning for men in Petersfield to offer advice about muscle and bone problems, and two conditions that are among the biggest killers for men.
Doctors and nurses from the Swan and Grange surgeries in Petersfield, and Horndean surgery will offer advice and information and take questions, about prostate cancer, diabetes and obesity, and muscle and bone problems.
Swan surgery spokesman said: “Each of the three doctors with give a talk on of the subjects lasting about 40 minutes and then there will be a question and answer session.”
The event in the United Reform Church Hall in College Street, on Saturday, February 1, from 9.30am comes as the NHS steps up its campaign encouraging men to adopt a more healthy life style.
On its Choices website the NHS warns: “More than one in three people will develop some form of cancer. Although there are about 200 different cancers, prostate cancer is among those that account for more than half of cases, and an unhealthy lifestyle is the root cause of about a third of all cancers.”
It adds that heart disease, and strokes are second and third as cause of death, and liver problems can also kill; losing weight and a healthy lifestyle greatly increases the chances of avoiding them.
The Office of National Statistics says more men are dying from ‘avoidable’ deaths than ever before, and reinforces the view a healthy lifestyle is vital.
And males accounted for about 60% of all the avoidable deaths, says Anne Campbell from the Office for National Statistics.
She added: “People who die prematurely from avoidable causes lose years of life, and the biggest contributors to avoidable deaths are chronic illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.”
Places at the health morning are limited to around 100, and need to be booked through one of the three surgeries. Doctors speaking on the day are Dr Richard Kershaw, Swan Surgery, Dr Penny Mileham, Grange Surgery, and Dr Zaid Hirmiz, Horndean Surgery.
