Following a post on the Liss and Surrounding Villages online bulletin board, a new environmental group has started in Liss.

Fiona Armitage had visited Greatham Park and was so impressed with the tree planting programme there she suggested setting up a tree planting group in Liss.

Fiona also regularly picks up in Greatham Woods.

Her most recent litter pick there was on February 17.

Afterwards she said: “I am always amazed how old the rubbish is – it can be 20 years old and damaging to our wildlife.”

Following her post, Ian James and Sam Ansell of Liss contacted her and they formed an environmental group with wider aims than just tree planting.

The new group will be called Liss Environmental Guardians, and it will have three main aims:

n to protect green spaces in and around Liss,

n to enhance the biodiversity of these spaces, and

n to look for more open and green spaces that can be protected.

Ian James said: “We also want to educate and raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity for the well-being of both us as humans and for the planet.”

Possible projects range from establishing hedgehogs’ highways in Liss to setting up a small environmental study centre.
