THE SYSTEM may have changed but the numbers all added up to a successful year for GCSE students at Horndean Technology College (HTC).

Oliver Beken, Joe Labedz and Dharma Short were all on Cloud Nine this morning after picking up their results from the Barton Cross school.

The trio all achieved a 9 – the highest possible grade – in either Maths, English or both during their summer examinations, with a 4 mark being a standard pass.

An impressive 75 and 67 per cent of students picked up a 4 or above for Maths or English, respectively, compared to the national averages of 59.4 and 62 per cent.

Julie Summerfield, HTC Principal, is proud of how her students reacted to the new system.

She said: “The students here I’m very proud of because they accepted the demands of these two subjects and worked their absolute hardest to make sure they passed.

“They had to sit three exams instead of two in Maths and exams were also longer so the demand on young people has been the greatest in many years because of the system change.

“To get 75 per cent compared to 60 per cent nationally shows they worked hard and their teachers worked extremely hard to support them."
